In the News: Districts Turn Algebra from Gatekeeper to Gateway
A recent article in K-12 Dive highlights how three of our NMIP partner districts—Chicago Public Schools, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools—are making meaningful progress in reimagining Algebra I as a gateway to opportunity.
Drawing on data and insights from NMIP’s recent case study, the piece explores how these districts are:
Expanding access to Algebra I in middle school,
Investing in high-quality, aligned instructional materials,
Supporting teacher capacity and student readiness, and
Offering high-dosage tutoring and summer learning pathways.
These strategies are already making a difference. In Chicago, 100% of 8th graders who passed Algebra I last year are on track in advanced math this year. In Miami-Dade, middle school Algebra proficiency has jumped by 15%. And in Los Angeles, over 92% of middle-grade Algebra students passed the course on average over five years.
